absent from the plenary session

the spouse was invited to speak at an event in another city. my parents watched the children. i tagged along.

this tag-along life.

all my plans are small ones. make sure that i am really on the waiting list for space in the community garden. buy a fishing license and trout stamp, find the unmarked trailhead for the trout stream with the waterfall. save yogurt containers for up-cupping a nice variety of hot peppers. all these little goals proliferate and scatter around me, an embarrassment.

for my private amusement, some remarks from my daughter after a disney movie from 1961:
"mommy, people have white faces and brown faces. do any people in this show have brown faces? this movie isn't very realistic, mommy. cows don't speak english. why would the mommy dog's owner have a mean friend? i think this is probably a fairytale story, mommy. it's only okay to me."

going the little parade of dogs that looked like their owners, it is probably a good thing that there weren't any people with brown faces in that movie. the soot-covered puppies and dalmatian plantation song already beg for a product-of-their time disclaimer, as far as i am concerned. it's minstrelsy all the way down.

reading: still meandering through the open road by jean giono. for uncertain reasons, i am attempting it in the original french.
listening to: sparrows jostling for nesting space under the solar panels.
working on: a goddamn cleaning rota. must i be that nagging mother? yes, i will be that nagging mother.
in the garden: crocuses are up. what a rotten joke, this winter season - hope, now, for spring.
