garden time

the moon, a dawn chorus, a cup of coffee. i woke up early, went for a short run, came home.

for all the years we've lived here, i've been using forced perspective, sight lines - all these disneyland tricks - to make our suburban backyard feel like four acres in the woods.

i'm getting better and better at fooling myself.

* * *

reading: every time the children see me with a book, they want me to read to them. i find it impossible to say no.
listening to: takashi kokubo - the day i saw the rainbow.
working on: building this montessori climbing thing for the toddler. it is taking much longer than seems credible.
in the garden: my 'congo' and 'krasavitsa moskvy' lilacs are both in bud for the first time. a white-haired man with little round glasses and a german accent told me to plant 'krasavitsa moskvy' where i could see it from a window, because it will stand lambent in the moonlight when it blooms. it's almost time to plant squash.
