2 blessed 2b stressed

i have a nice bass from the lake, herbs and veg from the garden. i can make a thai green curry to showcase the fish and the chili peppers and the little streaked green eggplants, a fluffy pile of jasmine rice, green tomato pickle (salvage from a broken vine). tomato sorbet dressed with a tumble of borage and tomato flowers, stone fruit semifreddo. a jewel colored digestif in a little stemmed glass.

so many pleasures of this summer are the pleasures of the table. and pleasures beforehand, as the children pick the tomatoes, wash the eggplants, bisect the vegetables with care and precision. it's a crackerjack year for mushrooms. earlier in the day, they watched the fish heart beat in a little dish of salt water, a sacrament of childhood.

i am so used to things going poorly that it is a surprise when anything turns out well. a good cup of coffee, a delivery arriving on time. an unexpected final week with our sick pet.

that's all. that's all there is.

reading: dipping into the references of "gay new york," can't keep this fact checker out of a culture war.
listening to: the kids are playing a game called "phoebe-heart ball," where only creatures who have trained their special abilities can go to the future, no matter how much they love each other.
working on: our cat smelled really bad in his final week, and the odor lingered on every soft surface with which he made contact. deep cleaning, as grief ritual.
in the garden: saddleback caterpillars are preventing me from pulling weeds, but a riot of flowers makes the chaos seem lively, lovely, intentional.
