too much, not enough

as you make a vast, relentless inventory of all the things you own, you will wonder, how many shoes do most people have? how many t-shirts? how many pairs of jeans? in some way, you suspect this has to do with death.

it all accumulates so strangely. how many dried-up pens do most people have? here's a mug that weeps slowly through a crack.

as the bible says, you are already saved (Rom. 8:24, Eph. 2:58), but you are also being saved (1 Cor. 1:8, 2 Cor. 2:15, Phil. 2:12), and you have the hope that you will be saved (Rom. 5:910, 1 Cor. 3:1215). you are working out your salvation in fear and trembling (Phil. 2:12), with hopeful confidence in the promises of christ (Rom. 5:2, 2 Tim. 2:1113).

outside in the snow, the garden looks so tightly edited.
