in the marsh across the way, there is golden winter grass and blue sky

moon snail shells stare up from the sand, hypnotized. there are scallop shells like bright and sandy madelines, and tube worms, and chalky angel wings.

Lunatia heros. Argopecten irradians. Potamilla reniformis. Petricola pholadiformis. this litany a legacy of a malacological childhood.

out in the cold green-grey water, there are coots and scoters and surfers wearing black wetsuits. farther from shore, the pelagic seabirds wheel and dive.
