that thing i thought would wreck me
i pulled on my blaze orange hat and went out for a long walk. overhead, a line of wild geese called against a flat grey sky. there was still a little bit of snow on the ground, and the air smelled like more snow on the way.
because no one was waiting for me, i climbed up one side of a puddingstone boulder and down the other.

reading: a book about snakes.
listening to: my brother's shearwater albums.
working on: a green sock.
in the garden: out back in the snow, there are brussels sprouts and chard and kale. after i moved out of my parents' house, it was years before i could eat kale again - for so long, it was our only winter green.
