mike's birthday at the shore
my brother caught me around the waist and tossed me into the surf. seabirds were plunge-diving all around us, and overhead, the moon was rising. he was the baby once, but now he's bigger than i am, smart and responsible and so sure of himself. we had hot donuts and cold milk. we saw a pygmy rattlesnake sunning itself on the sandy path. i pulled a long sliver from the soft pad of melissa's foot, and we spent too much time playing frisbee and foxtail in the sun.
* * * reading: how to read a north carolina beach. it was a gift from my dad. listening to: a hot flat wind. working on: making breakfast. in the garden: little green anoles are hiding in the butterfly bushes.
