memorial day

thank you, everyone, for your good wishes! yesterday's race went well - better than i had expected, actually. i have not been back in training for long, and since i have some days that are better than others, it is hard to train consistently.

this morning, i received my splits. i was at my target pace for the first part of the race, but at the end, i approached a six-minute mile. everyone along the course was cheering for me - go, number 63! - and i felt good, and i decided to go as fast as i could.

a six-minute mile used to be nothing to me, like breathing. today, though, i am so sore.

last night, i had a cookout at my house. the rain moved through and took the humidity with it. i put some paper bunting and little white lights on the back deck, made a big pitcher of white sangria and...just had a lovely and effortless evening.

when i lived in my first house on long island, we had summer cookouts all the time. here is my recipe for vegetable marinade. it is amazing on chinese eggplant.

blend together:
2/3 cup olive oil
1/3 cup balsamic vinegar - the most important ingredient!
1/4 cup minced red onion
a big handful of fresh basil
4 cloves of minced garlic
1/2 teaspoon salt
3/4 teaspoon black pepper - if yours is fresh ground, maybe use a little less?
